What is the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991?
This act includes legislation that prohibits or restricts people from keeping certain dog breeds, and also makes it an offence to allow any breed of dog to be dangerously out of control.

Dangerous Dog Offences
Your dog will be classified as dangerously out of control if they have:
- Injured a person
- Made someone feel like they might injure them
- Attacked someone’s animal or dog
- Made the animal’s owner feel as though they could become injured if they attempted to stop your dog from attacking their animal or dog.
Penalties and Sentences
If you’re the owner of a dog that is dangerously out of control, then you may be faced with fines and/or up to six months in prison. It’s also likely that your dog will be destroyed, and you may be disqualified from owning another dog for a certain amount of time. Here are some more specific examples;
- If your dog injures a guide dog or assistant dog, you could face imprisonment for up to three years
- If your dog injures another person, you could face up to five years imprisonment.
- If your dog kills someone, you could face up to 14 years in prison.

What Breeds of Dog Are Banned in the UK?
It’s against the law in the UK to own certain dog breeds, as well as sell, give away, abandon, or breed from them. This includes:
- XL Bully (without an exemption certificate)
- Japanese Tosa
- Pit bull terrier
- Fila Braziliero
- Dogo Argentino
It’s also important to note that whether your dog is a banned type can also depend on its appearance and character, rather than its breed. So for example, if your dog has lots of the characteristics and matches the appearance of a Fila Braziliero, then it could count as a banned type.
