Life as a trainee solicitor

Monday 22nd October 2018

I was lucky enough to be offered a training contract with Waldrons this year, just as I was finishing my Legal Practice Course at the University of Law. This was such an amazing opportunity for me and I felt so lucky and proud that I was able to continue working for Waldrons, but now as a Trainee Solicitor and take my training to the next level.

I started my training contract on 1st August and my first seat is in the Employment and Corporate department. After nearly two months of working in a busy environment I am starting to feel settled and beginning to see a real insight into the world of being a solicitor. I was worried about the world of full time work and how much of a different step this would be for me from student life, however, Waldrons have really made me feel welcome.

Even though I have only just started my training contract I have already experienced so much. I have met with clients regarding settlement agreements and was able to give general employment advice and I have drafted various employment documents, including cross-option agreements and advice reports. I have opened my own files and completed the work from start to finish which is a great way of finding out how files in the commercial department work and run on a day to day basis.

I have followed the advice of my supervisor and feel more confident every day. All lawyers here have really helped and gave me the guidance I need to start my training contract, and have always been on hand to answer any questions I have had. I have also been fortunate enough to attend networking events as a trainee solicitor which has improved my confidence no end.

Whilst I am still settling in to life as a trainee solicitor, I am enjoying every minute and love the rush of a busy working environment. I look forward to growing and learning new skills within the Employment and Corporate department and taking the skills I have learnt on to my next seat next year.
