What is a Robbery?
Robbery is when someone steals property and uses force or a threat of force in order to do so. This is covered under the Theft Act 1968, Section 8(1). Robbery is an indictable offence that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Types of Robbery
- Robbery – street and less sophisticated commercial: This offence includes little to no planning and involves robbery in public places (like public transport and shops).
- Robbery – professionally planned commercial: This offence requires much more planning and targets commercial premises.
- Robbery – dwelling: This is when robberies target people’s homes.
