What is Careless Driving?

Careless driving is defined under the Road Traffic Act 1988, Section 3, as when “a person drives a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place”.

This means that the person’s driving is below the standard of what’s expected of a competent and safe driver.

Some examples of careless driving include being distracted by your phone while driving, not stopping at a red light, and driving too close to other vehicles on the road.

What are the Penalties for Careless Driving?

Penalties range depending on the circumstances and severity of each case, but could include:

Fixed penalty: For more minor offences, a £100 fine with 3 points on the driver’s licence is usually given.
Improvement course: Some people are given the option to choose whether they want a fixed penalty or to attend a driver improvement course.
Courts summons: For more serious offences, you may face penalties like a hefty fine, 3 to 9 penalty points, or a driving ban in some cases.
